Wilson’s Girls Post Top Relay Time

The girls’ sprint-medley relay team from Long Beach Wilson won its race with a nation-leading time of 3 minutes 57.85 seconds Friday during the first day of the two-day Texas Relays in Austin, Texas.

The Bruins also ran 3:52.74 to qualify for the 1,600-meter relay final along with Long Beach Poly, which timed 3:50.85.

Sophomore Rodney Van of Long Beach Poly was second in the boys’ long jump with a personal-best leap of 23-01/4. Poly’s boys’ 1,600 relay team qualified for today’s final with a state-leading 3:15.56, and the Jackrabbits were the top qualifier in the 800 relay at 1:26.78.

In boys’ tennis:

Ball advances--Second-seeded Carsten Ball, a freshman from Corona del Mar High, defeated Nick Jon Wieand of San Antonio, 6-0, 6-2, in first-round boys’ 14 division play at the Easter Bowl/USTA Super National Spring Championships at Palm Springs.

Fourth-seeded Lee Singer of Dana Hills High beat Nick Spinazze of Shreveport, La., 6-1, 6-0, in the same division. Unseeded Gary Sacks, a freshman from Calabasas, lost to ninth-seeded Benjamin Rogers, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

In baseball:

West Torrance 6, Palos Verdes Peninsula 5--Ryan Owen struck out the side with runners at first and second and nobody out in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the victory for West Torrance (9-4) in the Bay League game.

Arcadia 6, Pasadena Muir 0--Chris Gelalich had three hits, including a double and a home run, and Alex George did not allow a hit and struck out four in four innings for No. 13-ranked Arcadia (11-2, 1-0) in a Pacific League game.

Sun Valley Village Christian 11, Downey Calvary Chapel 0--Daniel Bowen threw a five-hitter, struck out seven and added two hits of his own to lead Village Christian (10-3) in the championship game of the Mary Star tournament. Casey Fritts added two hits, including a seventh-inning grand slam.
