Rainbow Girls

Megan stopped her scooter. Dee Dee was standing in the street. She was looking at the sky.

“What are you doing?” Megan shouted.

“It’s so close you can almost touch it,” Dee Dee said.

A light mist was falling. “That’s just a rainbow.”

“There’s a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow,” Dee Dee said.

“That’s not true,” Megan told her.

Dee Dee wasn’t listening. “It’s in the park. Come on.”

Megan dropped her scooter and followed. “This is really dumb. There’s no pot of gold in the park or anywhere!”

Dee Dee searched the bushes. “Find the end of the rainbow. Look under the bushes.”

“You won’t ever find it,” Megan said. “It’s only a fairy tale.”

“What is?” Dee Dee asked.

“The pot of gold story. Someone made it up. Rainbows come when it’s raining and the sun is shining. There’s no pot of gold at the end.”

“When we find it we’ll be rich and happy all our lives,” Dee Dee said. “Keep looking for it.”

Megan thought of all the things she would buy. Maybe a new bicycle and all the ice cream she could eat.

The sky got dark. Rain drizzled through the trees. Megan shivered. “Aren’t you cold?” she asked. Dee Dee wasn’t wearing a sweater. “I was dumb to follow you here.” Megan turned and left.

“I’m staying,” Dee Dee said. “I need to make a wish.”

“‘Bye then.” Megan found her scooter and called again, “Are you coming?” But the little girl stood alone looking at the sky. Megan knew Dee Dee would not wish for a bicycle or ice cream. What she most needed was a friend. Megan went back.

“Dee Dee, do you want to ride my scooter?”

Dee Dee shook her head. “I don’t know how.”

“I’ll show you,” Megan said. “Hurry, it’s raining.”

Dee Dee’s eyes shone just as if she had found the pot of gold.

As they started off, a canopy of color appeared. The rainbow ended right over the two little girls.

Nancy Robison likes to watch for rainbows. Look for them when a light rain is falling and the sun is shining at the same time. They usually appear opposite the sunlight.
