Kindergarten Class

Re “Kindergarten Is for the Kids,” letters, April 13: As elementary school teachers, my wife and I agree that, ideally, kindergarten should be less about curriculum and more about socialization. However, I ask the letter writers and others who agree with them, are you willing to accept lower test scores in the following grades?

As long as the emphasis is placed on achieving a certain level of scores in the early grades, kindergarten will increasingly be more academically challenging. The nation’s children will continue to sprint to academic exhaustion when they should be truly paced for the educational marathon, as Leonard Penzo so eloquently wrote.
