A New View for Erstad, Glaus

Precautions and prescriptions altered the Angel lineup considerably Wednesday.

Darin Erstad, who went face-first into the center-field wall trying to make a catch Tuesday, was moved to designated hitter. Third baseman Troy Glaus, who left Tuesday’s game with contact lens problems, was on the bench.

Manager Mike Scioscia said he wanted to rest Erstad a little, with the Angels playing a 1 p.m. game at Oakland today.

But Glaus’ vision troubles may be more of a problem. He was available Wednesday as a pinch-hitter or defensive replacement, but only “under the right circumstances,” Scioscia said.

Whether Glaus would return to the lineup today was unknown.

“It has been something he has dealt with on and off for a couple years,” Scioscia said. “He has had problems with clarity. His vision became more labored last night.”

Glaus struck out with runners on second and third in the first inning Tuesday. He struck out with runners on first and second in the second inning.

“We’re not super concerned about this,” Scioscia said.

Still, Glaus has struck out 11 times in 41 at-bats this season. He struck out 158 times last season, 163 times in 2000 and 143 times in 1999.
