Oil’s Well

In “Misspent Alaska Crusade” (editorial, April 15) I read that we shouldn’t worry about the current stoppage of certain oil imports because “Saudi Arabia and others--what others?--”are expected to make up for the loss.” Funny, but several weeks ago, during discussions about raising gas mileage standards, I heard much the same assurances from those of a more conservative stripe so as to downplay the “lessen dependence on foreign oil” argument.

So there we have it. Liberals and conservatives agree that we shouldn’t worry too much about short-term oil import problems because we can rely on Saudi Arabia to get us out of trouble.

Why am I still worried?
