A U.S. Army lawyer was named chief prosecutor for a special court in Sierra Leone, responsible for trying cases of mass murder, rape and mutilations in the West African nation.

The attorney, David Crane, serves in the Pentagon’s inspector-general’s office, heading a unit that clears personnel for access to sensitive programs.

The war crimes tribunal, composed of international and Sierra Leone prosecutors and judges, is expected to be functioning by October.
