Vivendi Can Seek Damages From Love

Vivendi Universal will be able to ask a jury for “speculative” damages from musician Courtney Love, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruled.
Love and Universal are battling over the status of the singer’s contract after she stopped recording for the label in 1999. Love argues that California law allows artists to terminate contracts after seven years. If she wins, the precedent may encourage other artists to break their contracts.
Judge Fumiko Wasserman sided with Universal, ruling that it is eligible to receive the so-called speculative damages, or estimates of potential losses, from Love if a jury finds she didn’t have the right to stop recording music.
Wasserman also denied Love’s argument that Universal couldn’t transfer her contract to another record company without her permission.
