A man told to leave a teenage girl’s birthday party Saturday night in Orange waited outside and opened fire on two Santa Ana men as they left, police said.

The two men were hospitalized in serious but stable condition with multiple gunshot wounds following what police described as a gang-related shooting.

The shots were fired about 11 p.m. outside the American Legion Hall in the 100 block of South Lemon Street, where a party was being held for a 15-year-old girl.

“When the party broke up, there was a verbal altercation,” said Lt. Bob Green of the Orange Police Department. “The shooter broke out a small handgun and opened fire on the victims.”

Police would not release the names of anyone involved. One victim was 22 and the other was 26.

Police described the gunman as a 27-year-old Latino man with a shaved head. He was wearing a blue shirt and shorts. Police said he fled in a compact red car, heading south on Lemon Street.

“We have an idea of what gangs are involved but we will not be releasing that information,” Green said.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at (714) 744-7403.
