The wildest costume party west of New Orleans’ Mardi Gras--the Exotic Erotic Ball, long a San Francisco ritual--is launching the 23rd year of the giddy celebration of sex with a party in Los Angeles. The masquerade extravaganza and its lingerie-clad characters, sideshow performers and musicians will gather at the Sunset Room for the kickoff gala with event founder Perry Mann as host. It’s the first of a cross-country series of parties that will end Oct. 19 at the annual San Francisco event.

The 23rd annual Long Beach Blues Festival wraps up its two-day run, following Saturday’s potent lineup (Robert Cray, Ohio Players, Otis Rush) with a bill highlighted by Etta James, Dr. John and Ike Turner.

Holiday music--Bach’s “Coffee” Cantata, two “Brandenburg” Concertos and Handel’s cantata “Look Down the Harmonious Saint”--makes up the program to be played by Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra in the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre on this holiday weekend. The vocal soloists are soprano Catherine Webster, tenor Daniel Plaster and bass Curtis Streetman. In “Brandenburg No. 5,” the soloists are violinist Elizabeth Blumenstock, flutist Stephen Schultz and harpsichordist Corey Jamason. Michael Eagan is music director of the period-instrument ensemble.

Drum-and-bass is the beat of the moment on Hollywood Boulevard, as the new Qtopia Events Center hosts a bill titled “Bassrush.” Among those featured will be Roni Size and MC Tali, Adam F and MC MC, DJ Craze and many more exponents of the spare dance-music subgenre.
