From Times Wire Reports

Ivory Coast’s army claimed that it had captured a rebel-held western town, but insurgents said they were still in control and residents reported gunfire and explosions late into the day.

A senior military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said loyalist forces had retaken Man, a city of 135,000, and said all the rebels had been killed or chased out.

But a spokesman for the rebels insisted that they were still in control and that the loyalist soldiers had fled. It was not immediately possible to reconcile the contradictory claims.
