New HIV and AIDS Cases on the Rise

From Times Wire Reports

In the last two years, the number of new HIV and AIDS patients in the city has more than doubled, according to an annual report Tuesday to the San Francisco Health Commission.

In 2000, there were about 500 new reported cases of people with HIV or AIDS. In 2002, that increased to 1,084, said James Loyce Jr., the city’s deputy director of health for AIDS programs.

Loyce said the reasons for the increase include a belief among some that new drugs and drug treatments will keep HIV and AIDS patients healthy longer.
