Sydney firefighters battled more than 60 brush fires that sprang up around Australia’s largest city as temperatures soared and strong winds fanned flames, sending a pall of smoke across the city to the ocean.

Five firefighters and two residents were taken to a hospital with burns, media reported. A handful of buildings were reportedly destroyed.

Firefighters evacuated suburbs as fires burned toward residential streets.
