Gilbert Fired By Flames

The Calgary Flames fired Coach Greg Gilbert and assistant Brad McCrimmon on Tuesday, after losing 11 of 12 games and enduring one of the worst months in team history.

General Manager Craig Button said Assistant General Manager Al MacNeil will serve as interim coach. Calgary, in last place in the Northwest Division, was 6-13-3-3 under Gilbert.

Florida Panther left wing Peter Worrell received a 10-day jail sentence and one year of probation after pleading no contest to driving under the influence.... Dainius Zubrus of the Washington Capitals will be sidelined four to six weeks after having surgery to remove a bone spur from his right hand.... Pittsburgh Penguin defenseman Dick Tarnstrom will be sidelined two to four weeks because of a broken left foot.
