Animals Seized in Raid on Store
From a Times Staff Writer
Acting on a tip, animal welfare officers raided an Echo Park pet shop Wednesday, taking hundreds of animals to a veterinarian and closing the store.
“They found pets in unsanitary conditions,” said Madeline Bernstein, president of SPCA Los Angeles. “Some appeared ill. Some had injuries that weren’t being treated.”
Bernstein said that the Blue Reef pet shop’s permits had expired and that it was unfit for animals.
SPCA investigators seized fish, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, a crow and several roosters.
