Dodgers Seem to Have Karros Trade Deficit

Share

Wait a minute -- Todd Hundley? The king of the meaningless solo homer? The same catcher whose defensive inadequacies spooked the entire Dodger pitching staff in 1999 and 2000? The same Todd Hundley who was so useless the last two seasons that he was openly despised by Cubs’ fans, even though his father is a living Cub legend? Karros and Grudzielanek are certainly part of what has ailed the Dodgers these last several years, but trading them for Hundley is like trading indigestion for irritable bowel syndrome.

I was trying to think of a player in the major leagues who can’t run, can’t hit, can’t throw and can’t stand Los Angeles. So were the Dodgers. Guess who the Dodgers traded for Tuesday?

Some time back, The Times slipped the business section in front of the sports section and while reading J.A. Adande’s column [“Deal for Dollars May Make Sense”] I felt so confused. You see, trading lifelong Dodger Eric Karros does make business sense, but I thought I was reading the sports section.

Adande’s rationale makes perfect sense in the world of “off-shore partnerships” and the practice of laying off thousands of employees while companies are still raking in billions of dollars of profit. Freeing up dollars to purchase free agents, improving the bottom line

Eric Karros has spent his entire career with the Dodgers and has always been “a company man.” He has never embarrassed the team or its management, although they damn well deserved it. Look up “sports” in the dictionary, Mr. Adande, and you may well decide that you are writing for the wrong section.

What’s the deal here? The Dodgers trade Gary Sheffield away and the clubhouse rejoices at getting rid of a malcontent, finally achieving harmony and the chemistry to win a championship. What do we get? A third-place finish. Now Eric Karros is described as another malcontent and management rejoices at getting rid of him, no doubt to encourage us this coming spring that the team has the harmony and chemistry to win a championship. Does this mean get ready for another third-place finish?

Another smooth move is getting Todd Hundley back, another complainer and malcontent who can’t hit. I can’t wait to hear the excuses next year.

Todd Hundley? Is it possible the Dodgers invited Kevin Malone back to make a guest trade?
