105-Year-Old Cedar Named Local Landmark
A 105-year-old deodar cedar called “The Big Tree” was approved as a local landmark by the city’s Landmark Commission in a 6-0 vote Monday night.
The designation protects the tree from being chopped down without city permission.
The site on 5th Street was put up for sale after the death of its 90-year-old owner earlier this year. The trustee of her estate had argued that the tree could endanger those in housing units considered for the site.
But Greyling Gentry, who lived in a house next to the cedar as a child, told commissioners that “there has been no liability from it for 105 years.”
