Civil Rights Group Files Petition for Prisoners
Los Angeles civil rights lawyers, clergy and academics filed a habeas corpus petition in federal court Monday to get hearings for prisoners captured in Afghanistan and held at the Guantanamo Bay naval base in Cuba.
The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected a similar bid last month, ruling that the group had no relationship with any prisoners and had made no effort to communicate with them.
In the latest petition, civil rights lawyer Stephen Yagman said he asked President Bush to forward a letter to each prisoner, offering to help them obtain legal counsel and court hearings.
