Rookie Keeper Injured as Zoo Elephant Attacks

A 6,000-pound elephant smashed a rookie keeper against a rock pile at Miami’s MetroZoo, badly injuring the man in what a spokesman described as an attack to test herd dominance.
Michael Embury, 31, who was in critical but stable condition after surgery, was the elephants’ newest keeper, the zoo’s Ron Magill said. “You, in effect, become part of the ... herd,” Magill said. “Any time a new member comes into the herd, they will sometimes test that member.”
