The Los Angeles City Council agreed Tuesday to make way for an improved pedestrian plaza south of Van Nuys City Hall by putting public parking for the civic center area underground.

The decision comes as the city prepares to open the high-rise Marvin Braude Constituent Service Center in the spring.

The city increased project funding from $4.8 million to $8.8 million to build the parking garage underground.
