Good Value in Seventh

Share

The rainy weather the last two days didn’t bother Sentimental Value.

Owned and bred by the Thoroughbred Corporation and trained by Kristin Mulhall, the 3-year-old Diesis filly has demonstrated she can run on either turf or a wet main track.

So, Sentimental Value will be comfortable in today’s seventh at Hollywood Park whether the race remains on the grass or switches to the dirt.

Second and third in her first two races in this country after winning two of seven in England, Sentimental Value has won two in a row. She took the Harold C. Ramser Sr. Handicap on the grass at Santa Anita on Oct. 14, then won the Matiara at Hollywood Park in her first race on dirt, necessitated when rain moved the race off the grass.

Victor Espinoza was aboard the chestnut for both of her U.S. victories and has the mount again today as he tries to overtake Laffit Pincay and Alex Solis in the jockey standings.

Entering the final week, Espinoza ranks third with 29 victories, but Pincay, who leads with 32, will be absent until the Santa Anita meet begins on Dec. 26, and Solis, who has 30 wins, will be off today, Thursday and Friday to spend some time with his family.

If the seventh stays on the turf, Nunatall is the one to beat. Trained by Bobby Frankel for owner Ed Gann, Nunatall was last seen running fourth in the Garden City Breeders’ Cup Handicap, a Grade I, on Sept. 8 at Belmont Park.

Race of the day: Resolve makes his Aqueduct debut today for owners Roddy Valente and Jared Abbruzzese and trainer Bruce Levine after having been claimed for $100,000 on Oct. 24 at Santa Anita. In his last race in California, the 4-year-old gray gelding lost by a head to Piensa Sonando, who won the Native Diver Handicap on Saturday.

Who’s hot: Doug O’Neill. The trainer has won with 15 of 55 starters at Hollywood Park, and with five days left in the meet, is on his way to the training title. Frankel is next with 10 victories.

Who’s not: Osman Cedeno and Caesar Bisono. The two jockeys are a combined four for 100 at Golden Gate Fields.
