‘Minority’ DVD filled with stunts and thrills

Share

“Minority Report”

Tom Cruise, Colin Farrell

Fox, $30

Steven Spielberg’s dark, disturbing, film noir sci-fi thriller, based on a short story by Philip K. Dick, is set in the near future, when three human beings called “precogs” envision murders before they are committed. Tom Cruise plays a “Precrime” law enforcer who finds himself on the run when he turns up a murderer in one of the precog visions.

The nifty two-disc DVD set does not include commentary by Spielberg, but comprehensive documentaries on the discs give insight into the making of this complex picture, which is filled with cutting-edge visual effects and thrilling stunts.

“Unfaithful”

Diane Lane, Richard Gere

Fox, $28

Diane Lane received some of the best reviews of her career for her performance in Adrian Lyne’s overheated erotic thriller about a wife and mother who enters into a dangerous affair with a very seductive Frenchman (the oh-so-hot Olivier Martinez) she meets casually one day in New York. Gere plays her sweet, affectionate husband, who decides to take matters into his own hands.

Lane also is the star of the DVD -- most notably with her commentary, in which she discusses how she got involved in the project and her feelings about her character. The digital edition also features 11 deleted scenes (including an alternate ending), cast interviews, a visit with veteran film editor Anne V. Coates and commentary from Lyne.

“An Evening With Kevin Smith”

Kevin Smith

Columbia TriStar, $28

Smith, a.k.a. Silent Bob, the rotund writer-director of art-house flicks “Clerks,” “Chasing Amy,” “Dogma” and “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back,” isn’t so silent in this two-disc set, which features his ribald, racy and sometimes offensive appearances at such colleges as the University of Wyoming and Kent State. Although some may faint at his language and frank sexual talk, Smith is quick-witted and handles questions from the audience with wit and candor.

“Back to the Future -- The Complete Trilogy”

Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd

Universal, $57

Robert Zemeckis’ clever, highly entertaining 1985 time-travel hit, which made a movie star out of Fox, has finally entered the digital age, packaged with the two disappointing sequels. The set -- available in either wide-screen or pan-and-scan -- features documentaries that were produced during the making of the films, commentaries with co-writer and producer Bob Gale and producer Neal Canton, deleted scenes, a nifty “Animated Anecdotes” that provides the option of seeing facts and trivia notes while viewing each movie, a Q&A; with Zemeckis and Gale, and scene-specific commentary on the first film with Fox.
