From a Times Staff Writer

Hollywood private detective Anthony J. Pellicano pleaded not guilty Monday to charges of illegally possessing two unregistered hand grenades and a quantity of plastic explosives in an office safe.

The federal indictment stemmed from a search by FBI agents seeking evidence of his alleged involvement in an attempt to threaten Los Angeles Times reporter Anita Busch, who was investigating actor Steven Seagal’s relationship with a reputed Mafia associate.

Another man, Alexander Proctor, is under arrest in connection with the threat. Proctor allegedly told an FBI informant that Pellicano paid him to carry out the threat on behalf of Seagal.

Pellicano has denied being involved in any attempt to intimidate The Times reporter, and the indictment makes no mention of the case. Seagal also has denied any involvement
