Recruit Who Died Had Meningococcal Infection
From Times Wire Reports
Marine Pvt. Miguel Zavala, 18, of Greenfield, Calif., died of a meningococcal bacteria infection, not from the outbreak of Group A streptococcus bacteria that sent more than 120 recruits to the hospital, officials said.
Zavala died Dec. 15 during his 23rd day of training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, just hours after seeking treatment for a rash on his leg. He is the only known recruit stricken by the meningococcal bacteria.
