A man who crashed his car into a utility pole in Cerritos and fled into two homes, stabbing a woman in the stomach, was in custody Thursday night after residents subdued him with a pot of boiling water, authorities said.

Sheriff’s deputies said Thanh Nguyen, 30, of Stockton was arguing with his girlfriend as he drove down 166th Street about noon when he lost control of the car and struck a telephone pole.

He ran into a home in the 16600 block of Moorbrook Avenue, pushing a woman aside and grabbing a knife from her kitchen, deputies said. He ran around the block to Stowers Avenue and entered another house through a garage door.

There he stabbed a woman and bit her husband, deputies said. The husband and neighbors subdued Nguyen after tossing scalding water at him.

He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The Stowers Avenue woman sustained stab wounds in her stomach, leg and hands. Her husband suffered a bite on the hand. They were being treated at St. Francis Hospital in Lynwood.
