Part of Bay Closed After Sewage Leak

County health officials closed a small section of Newport Bay on Thursday after about 10 gallons of raw sewage leaked from a pump-out station hose.

Although the spill is a relatively small one, Bayside Drive Beach and the waters near the Harbor Patrol were closed because the water is used by swimmers and commercial divers who clean boat hulls, said Larry Honeybourne, chief of the Orange County Health Care Agency’s water quality section.

The spill was discovered at 9:40 a.m. by health care workers who routinely monitor the hoses. The station will be closed to boaters until repairs are made today, officials said. The waters will be closed to swimmers and divers until Saturday.
