Health workers began slaughtering 16,000 chickens at the Ta Kwu Ling farm in Hong Kong after more than 1,000 birds there died from avian flu, the government announced.

Officials from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said 14 nearby farms reported no abnormal deaths among chickens. As a precaution, the Hong Kong wholesale poultry market will be closed two days for cleansing, officials said.
