Avalanche Keeps Sliding at Home

Steve Sullivan and Kyle Calder scored second-period goals Saturday night, and the Chicago Blackhawks won, 3-2, at Denver to hand the Avalanche its fourth consecutive loss at home, a first for Colorado.

The last time the franchise lost four in a row at home was in February 1994 when playing as the Quebec Nordiques.

Tony Amonte had a goal and an assist, and backup goalie Steve Passmore made 21 saves for the Blackhawks. Passmore, making his first start since Jan. 10, earned his third consecutive victory.

Colorado’s Patrick Roy had 18 saves.

Goals by Dan Hinote and Joe Sakic gave Colorado a 2-1 lead in the first period. Hinote deflected Stephane Yelle’s shot from the right point at 2:46.

Amonte, fighting for position in front of the net with Colorado’s Adam Foote, tipped in a rebound at 8:04 to tie it for his 21st goal.

Sakic scored his 18th goal a minute later on a backhander from the slot.

The Blackhawks scored twice early in the second period to take the lead and held it during a scoreless third period.

Calgary 4, Vancouver 3--Jason Botterill scored the game-winner on a power play 10:05 into the third period and the Flames ended the Canucks’ nine-game unbeaten streak with a victory at Vancouver.

With time running out in Todd Bertuzzi’s roughing penalty, Botterill, recalled from Saint John of the AHL earlier in the day, deflected Bob Boughner’s high point shot past Peter Skudra.

Jarome Iginla had a goal and an assist and Ronald Petrovicky and Marc Savard also scored as the Flames avenged a 4-1 loss to the Canucks on home ice 24 hours earlier.

Philadelphia 5, St. Louis 0--Roman Cechmanek stopped 30 shots for his third shutout of the season and Chris Therien scored a short-handed goal for the Flyers at St. Louis. It was the second shutout in four starts for Cechmanek.

Keith Primeau had a goal and reached 300 career assists with his second of the night. Kim Johnsson, Justin Williams and John LeClair also scored for the Flyers.

Detroit 3, Ottawa 2--Sergei Fedorov scored his 350th and 351st career goals to lead the Red Wings at Ottawa. All five goals in the game were scored in the second period.

Steve Duchesne also scored for Detroit, which lost two one-goal leads before Fedorov scored his second of the period at 18:15 to put the Red Wings in front for good.

Fedorov joined teammates Steve Yzerman, Brett Hull, Luc Robitaille and Brendan Shanahan to give the Red Wings five players with more than 350 career goals.

Marian Hossa and Daniel Alfredsson scored for Ottawa.

Washington 4, Tampa Bay 2--Dainius Zubrus, Ulf Dahlen and Colin Forbes scored second-period goals for the Capitals at Tampa Bay.

Vaclav Prospal and Dave Andreychuk scored for the Lightning, which is 1-8-2-1 in its last 12 home games.

Forbes made it 3-1 with seven minutes left, chasing Lightning goalie Nikolai Khabibulin, who allowed three goals on 12 shots.

Chris Simon scored an empty-net goal for the Capitals in the final minute.

Nashville 1, Columbus 0--Denis Arkhipov split two defenders and scored while sliding to the ice with 2:15 left in overtime to give the Predators the victory at Columbus.

Tomas Vokoun had 25 saves for his second shutout of the season. Blue Jacket goalie Marc Denis stopped the first 23 shots he faced.

The Predators remained perfect in overtime (5-0-10) this season.

Boston 4, Florida 1--Byron Dafoe made 22 saves and the Bruins extended their unbeaten streak to six games with a victory at Boston.

The Bruins became the only team in the NHL to have five players with 20 or more goals when Sergei Samsonov scored his 20th.

Detroit and Ottawa are the only other teams with three.

New Jersey 2, Pittsburgh 1--Brian Rafalski scored with 8.6 seconds remaining in overtime to lead the Devils to an overtime victory at Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh is winless in its last five games (0-3-1-1), with two games remaining before the Olympic break.

Toronto 4, Montreal 1--Shayne Corson and Robert Reichel each had a goal and an assist to give the Maple Leafs the victory at Toronto.

Travis Green and Jyrki Lumme also scored for the Maple Leafs, who outshot Montreal, 46-22. Montreal goalie Jose Theodore, who had shutouts in his previous two games, made 42 saves.
