Let Police Commission Decide Parks’ Future

Share

“Chief: Walk Away Proud” (editorial, Feb. 10) ignored an important point. Charter Amendment F, passed in 1992 by a large majority of the voters, set in place a system of determining who should be the leader of the LAPD without regard to the opinions of the mayor, The Times or Rep. Maxine Waters. The decision regarding Bernard Parks’ request for an additional term as chief of the LAPD should properly be made by the Police Commission, based upon objective criteria related to his performance as viewed against the rating criteria set by the commission.

I was prepared to believe this was all about Parks’ job performance until I read your editorial. You state, “The union’s leadership has attacked Parks with an unseemly zeal that even tops the fervor with which it went after the previous police chief, Willie L. Williams. While Williams and Parks could not be more different, they are both African Americans.” I forgot all about Chief Williams. This sounds like a clear case of racism. How did the union feel about Daryl Gates? Yeah, that’s what I thought.
