Providence Pulls Off Upset

Providence scored 14 of the final 20 points and defeated No. 22-ranked Virginia Tech, 67-61, Wednesday night at Providence, R.I.

The Friars (11-12, in the 5-7 Big East) beat a ranked opponent for the first time in Jim Jabir’s six seasons as coach.

Chrissy Vozabs led the Friars with 13 points. It was Providence’s third consecutive victory. The Friars also matched their victory total for last season.

Virginia Tech (16-7, 7-5) got 15 points and 10 rebounds from Erin Gibson.

No. 1 Connecticut 85, Syracuse 55--Diana Taurasi had 24 points for the Huskies (27-0, 13-0 in the Big East) at Syracuse, N.Y.

It was Connecticut’s 35th consecutive regular-season victory.

Julie McBride led Syracuse (14-9, 7-5) with 16 points, making all four of her three-point shots.

No. 4 Oklahoma 76, No. 12 Kansas State 68--Caton Hill scored 20 points and the Sooners (21-2, 11-1 in the Big 12) withstood two late rallies at Manhattan, Kan., for their seventh consecutive victory.

The Sooners, who got 17 points from Rosalind Ross, overcame poor shooting and held off two second-half spurts by Kansas State (21-5, 9-3).

Kendra Wecker and Nicole Ohlde each had 20 points for the Wildcats.

No. 11 Baylor 81, Texas A&M; 68--Sheila Lambert scored 29 points and Danielle Crockrom had 21 for the Bears (20-4, 8-4 in the Big 12) at College Station, Texas.

Lambert and Crockrom sparked 22-4 run in the first 10 minutes of the second half that gave Baylor a 62-42 lead.

Meg Banahan and Celeria Washington had 13 points apiece for Texas A&M; (12-12, 4-8).

No. 13 Colorado 78, Missouri 47--Jenny Roulier had five three-point baskets and finished with 21 points for the Buffaloes (19-7, 9-4 in the Big 12) at Boulder, Colo.

Missouri (14-9, 5-7), which hasn’t won at Boulder since 1990, shot 28% and committed 29 turnovers.

No. 23 Notre Dame 66, St. John’s 31--Ericka Haney and Alicia Ratay each scored 14 points and the Irish (16-7, 10-2 Big East) extended their home winning streak to 50 games, handing the Red Storm (3-21, 0-13) its 13th consecutive loss.
