Nextel Communications Inc. lost $127 million in domestic operations in the fourth quarter of 2001 three times as much as in the year-ago quarter.

But company executives said they were pleased with the company’s growth in cash flow and new subscribers.

The telecommunications firm said it could not compute its overall numbers, including loss per share, because it had yet to determine the details of a $1-billion-to-$2-billion debt restructuring charge for its international subsidiary, NII Holdings.

The international unit was to be spun off into a separate stock, but there has not yet been an initial public offering. The final figures will be available April 1.

Nextel shares climbed 12 cents to $4.50 on Nasdaq.
