Nuns to Mark 150 Years in State
The sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, a religious order that has been teaching and serving poor communities in California since 1851, will celebrate its sesquicentennial March 9 at Our Lady of Sorrows parish, 121 E. Sola St., Santa Barbara.
In the celebration, which will include a Mass of thanksgiving at 11 a.m., followed by a reception at noon, the sisters wish to thank families, students, colleagues and supporters who have shared their history. They invite friends and former students to come.
The Notre Dame sisters came to Southern California in 1906, when they established Dolores School for the elementary grades in Santa Barbara, which later merged with Our Lady of Guadalupe School.
In Los Angeles, Notre Dame nuns opened St. Columbkille’s School on South Main Street in 1923. Today, they serve there and at Nativity parish and school near Vermont and Slauson avenues.
