Most Phone Service Restored After Cable Accident in Walnut
Workers on Monday had restored most--but not all--telephone service cut off last week by a construction accident that affected at least 828 and perhaps as many as 2,700 homes and businesses in the San Gabriel Valley city of Walnut.
Verizon spokeswoman Julia Wilson said that five days after Wednesday’s accident, when workers excavating for a new housing project severed two cables, service had been restored to all but 2% of the telephones affected.
The remaining phones, mostly belonging to businesses, will be working again in a day or two, Wilson said.
Resident William Noyes said he lost service about 11 a.m. Wednesday.
His phone and that of a neighbor were still out Monday, Noyes said.
Wilson said Verizon had received 828 “trouble calls” since Wednesday, representing the minimum number of phones affected.
However, the severed cables served 2,700 lines.
“We regret any inconvenience to our customers in that area, and we’ve been working very hard to get everything back into service,” Wilson said.
