Alice Wallace, 77, a model and “Goldwyn Girl” who appeared in glamorous films of the 1940s and on the covers of major magazines and in commercials, died of emphysema Saturday in Sherman Oaks.

As a UCLA student, she began modeling and joined Sam Goldwyn’s bevy of “Goldwyn Girls,” starring in such films as the 1944 “Up in Arms.”

Her motion pictures typecast her in the role of show girl or fashion model.

Her films included “Show Business,” “Till the Clouds Roll By,” “A Song Is Born” and “The Girl From Jones Beach.”

Wallace moved to New York in 1949 and flourished as a highly paid Powers model.

But the work eventually proved her physical undoing when she posed for a cigarette commercial for television and became a heavy smoker.

She was diagnosed with emphysema in 1992, gave up her 38-year smoking habit and participated in experiments to treat the disease.

After her modeling career ended, she devoted herself to family and charities.
