The U.S. can send three men’s singles skaters to the Salt Lake City Winter Games.

TIM GOEBEL

* Had career bests last season, winning the U.S. title and finishing fourth at the World Championships. Followed with another strong season, winning Skate America, finishing second at Nations Cup and finishing third at the Grand Prix Final. A spectacular jumper, he has landed 50 quadruple jumps in competition. He has enhanced his artistry but must persuade judges he is a complete skater.
TODD ELDREDGE
Lake Angelus, Mich.
* Five-time national champion and 1996 world champion, he has legions of admirers for his edging and spins. However, without a consistent quad he can only hope his rivals fall for him to win internationally. The oldest of the top men’s contenders at 30. When he made his debut at U.S. championships in 1988, Goebel was 7 years old.

* This has been a perplexing season for the two-time U.S. champion and two-time world bronze medalist. He was second at the Goodwill Games but fell to fourth at Skate America and eighth at the Nations Cup. Finished fourth at last year’s U.S. championships.
