Dorsey Gets a Historic Victory
Dorsey High guard Drew Gibson didn’t realize he was making history--or did he?
The smooth manner in which Gibson drove the baseline and scored the winning basket in Dorsey’s 82-79 victory over host Crenshaw on Wednesday in the teams’ Coliseum League opener seemed to indicate he realized the significance of his accomplishment.
In reality, Gibson had no idea he had just helped the Dons hand Crenshaw only the eighth homecourt loss in Cougar Coach Willie West’s 31 seasons.
“It’s good to be one of the eight,” said Gibson, who scored 15 of his 19 points in the first half. “All we have to do is build on this.”
Crenshaw (11-5), No. 13 in The Times’ rankings, tied the score, 78-78, when Derrick Clark drove for a layup with less than a minute to play in the back-and-forth contest.
But Gibson took a pass, drove the baseline and elevated for a basket that put Dorsey ahead, 80-78. The Dons (9-4) stole the ball on Crenshaw’s next possession, and Donald Wilson made two free throws with nine seconds remaining to make the score 82-78.
Crenshaw’s Money Brown made one of two free throws with five seconds remaining to pull the Cougars within three points, but no one could grab the rebound before time expired.
LeBoise Gladden made six three-pointers and finished with a team-high 26 points for Dorsey. Marcus Williams scored 23 points and Clark had 21 for Crenshaw, which made only 12 of 30 free throws.
“If we could make layups and free throws, we might be undefeated right now,” West said. “That has hurt us all [season].”

Fremont 105, Jefferson 66--Mark Bradford scored 21 points for the second-ranked Pathfinders (14-1) in a Coliseum League opener at Fremont. Darren Brown had 18 points and 15 rebounds and Glen Bullard had 18 points for Fremont (14-1), which led, 28-14, after the first quarter and 56-26 at halftime.
Santa Margarita 68, St. John Bosco 60--Len Collins had 28 points and seven rebounds to lead No. 3 Santa Margarita (17-1) in a Serra League opener at St. John Bosco (16-3).
Gio St. Amant had 30 points for 19th-ranked St. John Bosco.
Downey 64, Dominguez 63--Day Hardy hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to win the game for host Downey (10-7), in a San Gabriel Valley League opener that ended Dominguez’ 62-game league winning streak. The Vikings rallied from a 59-50 deficit with 1:30 remaining.
In girls’ basketball:
Long Beach Poly 68, Long Beach Wilson 50--The fifth-ranked Jackrabbits had 18 steals against No. 17 Wilson, leading by as many as 28 points en route to their 17th consecutive victory.
Poly (17-0, 2-0) beat its strongest challenger for the Moore League title for the second time in a week.
The Jackrabbits defeated Wilson in the final of the Ayala Best of the West tournament on Saturday, 61-44.
Poly used its press to open a 17-6 lead after one quarter. The defense forced 10 turnovers in the third quarter and the Jackrabbits outscored Wilson, 20-8, to take a 54-32 cushion into the fourth.
“We thought we could put some pressure on them and cause some mistakes,” said Carl Buggs, Poly’s coach. “We came out in the third quarter the way we did in the first.”
Cynthia Buggs led Poly with 17 points, 13 in the first half, including three three-point baskets.
Wilson (12-4, 0-1) got 14 points from Neka Mixon and 12 from Brandi Knight.

In girls’ water polo:
Riverside North 9, Arlington 8--Alaina Whitaker scored seven goals and Kasey Weaver stopped 17 shots to lead North in an Ivy League game at Arlington (8-3).
After Whitaker’s seventh goal gave the Huskies a 9-6 lead with 3:48 remaining, Arlington’s Jennifer D’Anna scored 44 seconds later on a four-meter penalty throw and teammate Meghan Rosenberger cut the lead to one with 2:34 left.
Arlington’s defense stopped North on its final three possessions, but the Lions couldn’t get the ball past Weaver, even with the player advantage the final 25 seconds.

In boys’ soccer:
Millikan 3, Long Beach Poly 0--Scott Mason, Raul Larios and Agustin Nunez each scored to help visiting Millikan extend its league unbeaten streak to 46 games, a Southern Section record. The second-ranked Rams (16-1, 3-0) broke the record of 45 set by La Canada from 1989-93. Millikan is 36-0-10 during the streak.
