Kariya Is Not an All-Star Starter

Paul Kariya was not voted to start in the NHL All-Star game for only the third time in his eight-season career.

Kariya held out at the start of the 1997-98 season, suffered a concussion after returning and missed the All-Star game. He was selected to the 1996 game as a reserve.

The reserves for this year’s game will be announced this week, but Kariya is considered a longshot. Skating with several line partners, he has 14 goals and 31 points.

Former Duck Teemu Selanne was voted to start for the World Team, one of three San Jose players who will start.

The Ducks aided Nashville’s first goal Saturday.

The Predators’ Denis Arkhipov carried the puck toward the net and was cleared by center Marc Chouinard. However, Chouinard also landed on top of goalie Steve Shields, who was powerless to stop Vladimir Orszagh from chipping in the puck.

Defenseman Jason York missed his third consecutive game because of tendinitis in his right shoulder. He said he was unsure whether he could play Monday against Nashville.
