Blazes in Eastern Areas Coming Under Control

From Times Wire Reports

Firefighters were looking toward the end of a battle against a run of big fires in eastern Australia that started Christmas Day and has destroyed 101 homes.

While a number of fires are still burning in parts of New South Wales state, they have largely been brought under control, and an end to fire-fanning weather is expected to provide continued relief.

The fires--some suspected to have been deliberately set--had been worsened by extreme summer temperatures and strong, dry winds.

The fires were the most intense since 1994 blazes that killed four people and destroyed more than 200 homes.
