Actually, Would He Even Be Drafted?

Trent Dilfer, last year’s Super Bowl quarterback with the Baltimore Ravens, is generally regarded as a journeyman even though he has been a winner with Tampa Bay, Baltimore and Seattle.

Dilfer has no illusions as to his athletic ability, however, saying, “If I was playing fantasy football, I would not be the first pick and I would not be my own first pick.

“But if you’re talking about trying to win football games, to win a championship and build the team the right way ... and thriving on adversity and not caving in under pressure, then I might be my first pick.”

Shame on them: Scott Ostler in the San Francisco Chronicle: “Showergate, where 44 Eagles’ cheerleaders are suing NFL visiting teams for peeping into the ladies’ locker room, is ugly stuff.

“But on the bright side, this puts to rest the tired old whine of pro athletes, that there’s nothing to do after a game in Philly.”

In demand: Tony Kornheiser of the Washington Post, commenting on the Redskins hiring Steve Spurrier: “You’re not just hot, you’re on fire.... When you walked away from Florida and said you wanted to take a shot at the NFL, that was like Stephen King saying he wanted to write another book-and would anybody out there like to publish it.”

More Spurrier: Jimmy Johnson commenting to Tim Cowlishaw of the Dallas Morning News on Spurrier becoming a pro coach before he was hired as coach of the Redskins: “He’s good. He’s really good. But the two things he’s going to need are a good general manager and a good defensive coordinator because he’s not interested in either of those two things.”

Honest opinion: Barbara Barker of Newsday on New Jersey Net General Manager Rod Thorn: “Thorn has been a victim of management politics before. A year after making [Michael] Jordan the best No. 3 pick in the history of the draft, Thorn was fired from the Bulls when Jerry Reinsdorf and his partners purchased the team. Because of that, he never got to be a part of Jordan’s six championships.

“Thorn is honest enough to admit that back in 1984, he would have drafted Hakeem Olajuwon over Jordan if Olajuwon had still been available.

“‘I knew he was a good player,’ Thorn said of Jordan, ‘but I didn’t think he was going to turn out to be arguably the best player in the history of the league.”’

Uh, plastic beer bottles? Six fans of London’s Millwall soccer club were banned from the stadium for life for acts of hooliganism.

One of them threw a meat pie at a linesman.

Said Millwood chairman Theo Paphitis: “If you allow a meat pie today, who knows what they’ll be throwing tomorrow?”

And finally: Syndicated columnist Norman Chad: “As soon as college coaching positions opened up, the media began rounding up the usual suspects. Mike Shanahan’s name has appeared on more short lists than a ‘loaf of bread.”’
