Trojans Trying to Maintain Momentum

USC football faithful are hoping Coach Pete Carroll’s string of successful blue-chip signings, begun with commitments from linemen Winston Justice and Manuel Wright of Long Beach Poly, will continue.

The Trojans still have their sights on running backs Lorenzo Booker of Ventura St. Bonaventure and Poly’s Hershel Dennis, lineman Fred Matua of Wilmington Banning and Poly defensive back Darnell Bing.

Not all the coveted recruits have flocked to USC recently, as quarterback Gavin Dickey from Tallahassee (Fla.) Lincoln committed to Florida and offensive lineman Alex Potasi of Harbor City Narbonne committed to UCLA. The Bruins also picked up a commitment from defensive back Mike Nixon, one of the top players in Arizona, from Phoenix Sunnyslope....

Offensive lineman Ryan Keating of Huntington Beach Edison has committed to Boise State. Defensive end Mike Leiter of Santa Margarita has committed to Colorado State....

Lineman Keith Jackson of Inglewood has committed to Arizona. California has picked up receivers Randy Bundy from Reseda Cleveland and David Beverly from Long Beach Wilson. Running back Ronnie Smith of Narbonne has committed to Nevada Las Vegas....

Linebacker Chad Slapnicka of Los Angeles Loyola, who scored a 1390 on the SAT and has a 3.9 grade-point average, has committed to Pennsylvania....

Receiver Shelvion Williams and lineman Marco Guerra of Los Angeles Fremont have made visits to Nevada Las Vegas and will be at San Diego State this weekend....

Center fielder Billy Eagle, a two-time All-Southern Section center fielder from Corona del Mar, has committed to UCLA.
