County Vows to Foil Group’s Forest Purchase
Del Norte County officials said they will do what they can to thwart a plan by the Save the Redwoods League to buy 25,000 acres of timber, unless the county can be compensated for tax losses.
The league has all but secured the $60 million it needs to buy the land, but the county said it is opposed to the deal unless it can be compensated through an endowment fund for the tax loss.
“The hardest amount to raise is the $2 million for the tax endowment fund,” said Kate Anderton, executive director of Save-the-Redwoods. “I’ve found no money in Sacramento to fund that, so I’m pursuing private sources.”
Even if the league is unable to fund the endowment, it plans to go ahead with the land deal, Anderton said.
