Wildfire Forces 200 People Out of Homes

Share

At least 200 people were evacuated from their homes Wednesday as a stubborn fire raged through 20 acres of Holy Jim Canyon of Cleveland National Forest. Many evacuees were inmates at the Joplin Boy’s Ranch, and all of the evacuations were precautionary.

Because of the steep terrain, firefighters were only able to fight the blaze with hand crews.

The fire erupted about 5:30 p.m. of unknown origin. The fire was traveling southwest but shifting because of winds and terrain.
