Star Count: Dodgers 3, Angels 1

Outfielder Shawn Green and pitchers Odalis Perez and Eric Gagne of the Dodgers, and outfielder Garret Anderson of the Angels were chosen Sunday to play in the 73rd major league All-Star game July 9 at Miller Park in Milwaukee.

All were selected as reserves by National League Manager Bob Brenly and American League Manager Joe Torre after fans voted in the starters.

“The fact that we have three guys that made the club is a tribute in a way to what has taken place here through the first half of the season,” said Manager Jim Tracy, who has the Dodgers in first place in the NL West.

Earlier this week, Tracy and Angel Manager Mike Scioscia were selected as coaches for the NL and AL teams, respectively.

This will be the second All-Star game for Green, who played for the AL team in 1999 as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Green, who sat out Sunday’s game against the Angels because of a jammed left thumb, got off to a slow start this season but has rebounded to bat .281 with 25 home runs and 63 runs batted in.

“I thought for sure after the first six weeks of the season that I would have three days off [during the All-Star break], so I’m enjoying the fact that things turned around,” Green said.

Gagne, who leads the majors with 29 saves; Perez, who is 9-4 with a 2.56 earned-run average, and Anderson, who is batting .298 with 15 homers and 60 RBIs, are among 25 players making their first All-Star appearance.

“I know I kind of play things down a little bit, but this is something from a personal standpoint I am really excited about and looking forward to,” said Anderson, who celebrated his 30th birthday Sunday.

Seattle Mariner outfielder Ichiro Suzuki received 2,516,016 votes, the most of any player for the second consecutive year. Chicago Cub outfielder Sammy Sosa led the NL with 2,140,315. Sosa also was the leading NL vote-getter in 1999.

Brenly selected six of his Arizona Diamondback players as reserves. Torre had three of his New York Yankee players chosen by fans and selected three more as reserves.

The Boston Red Sox were the only other team with more than three players on an All-Star team.

The AL starters are catcher Jorge Posada, first baseman Jason Giambi and second baseman Alfonso Soriano of the Yankees, shortstop Alex Rodriguez of the Texas Rangers and third baseman Shea Hillenbrand of the Red Sox.

Suzuki, Manny Ramirez of the Red Sox and Torii Hunter of the Minnesota Twins are the outfielders.

The nine-man pitching staff features starters Derek Lowe and Pedro Martinez of the Red Sox, Mark Buehrle of the White Sox, Freddy Garcia of the Mariners, Roy Halladay of the Blue Jays and Barry Zito of the Athletics.

The closers are Eddie Guardado of the Twins, Mariano Rivera of the Yankees and Kazuhiro Sasaki of the Mariners.

The starting infield for the NL will be catcher Mike Piazza of the New York Mets, first baseman Todd Helton of the Colorado Rockies, second baseman Jose Vidro of the Montreal Expos, and third baseman Scott Rolen and shortstop Jimmy Rollins of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants and Vladamir Guerrero of the Expos join Sosa in the outfield.

Along with Perez and Gagne, the NL pitching staff includes Tom Glavine and John Smoltz of the Atlanta Braves, Trevor Hoffman of the San Diego Padres, Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling and Byung-Hyun Kim of the Diamondbacks, Matt Morris of the St. Louis Cardinals and Mike Williams of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

“I’m not going to say I’m a superstar, but I deserve to be there because I’ve been working hard,” said Perez, a 24-year-old left-hander who was acquired along with outfielder Brian Jordan from the Atlanta Braves in a January trade for Gary Sheffield.

One spot on each team is still to be determined by fan voting on the Internet over the next two days at MLB.com and ESPN.com.

Angel outfielder Darin Erstad, Cleveland first baseman Jim Thome, Oakland third baseman Eric Chavez, Boston outfielder Johnny Damon and Chicago outfielder Magglio Ordonez are the candidates in the AL.

Versatile St. Louis infielder/outfielder Albert Pujols, San Diego outfielder Ryan Klesko, Colorado outfielder Larry Walker, Pittsburgh outfielder Brian Giles and Atlanta outfielder Andruw Jones are NL candidates.
