New Subtitling Technology
Lynn Smith’s story on Tripod Captioned Films for the hearing-impaired was very informative on this large, underserved segment of the population (“Words Can Describe It,” May 26).
While Tripod is able to make some captioned films available for screenings, at DTS we have developed a new product for theaters, the DTS-CSS Cinema Subtitling System, which makes it possible to provide subtitles and captions on demand for virtually every film released.
Instead of being etched onto the film print, subtitles or captions are stored on a hard drive that synchronizes to the time code already found on prints of movies shown with DTS digital sound. Properly equipped theaters can project an overlay of the subtitles or captions onto the screen along with the movie.
In today’s large multiplexes, it’s not hard to imagine some screens being used to show movies to people who currently never go to the cinema.
