Fireworks From ‘Men in Black II’

The sci-fi comedy “Men in Black II” scored the biggest opening ever over a Fourth of July weekend, raking in $52.1 million and sending its five-day total since debuting Wednesday to $87.2 million. Even so, considering ticket price inflation, the film sold nearly 20% fewer tickets than the original “Men in Black” did in 1997, when the average ticket price was $4.59.
The Adam Sandler comedy, “Mr. Deeds,” grossed $18.4 million for second place, followed by “Lilo & Stitch” with $12.6 million and “Minority Report” with $12.5 million. The basketball-themed “Like Mike” debuted in fifth place with $12.2 million while “The Powerpuff Girls” opened in ninth place with $3.6 million.
