Wilander, Shriver Are Hall of Fame Inductees

Mats Wilander, a winner of eight Grand Slam events, and Pat Shriver, part of the most productive women’s doubles team in history, were inducted Saturday into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I.

“It’s kind of a defining moment in a lot of peoples’ careers,” said Wilander, a 37-year-old Swede. “It’s something you never think of while you’re playing, and then you get the phone call and you realize how special it is.”

In 1988, when he won three of four majors--falling only at Wimbledon--Wilander wound up as the world’s top-ranked player. Overall, he won 33 singles titles, including seven Grand Slams. He also won the Wimbledon doubles title in 1986.

He won the French Open in 1982 at 17 years 9 months, becoming at that time the youngest champion in a major.

Shriver teamed with Martina Navratilova for 109 consecutive victories from 1983 to 1985. Twenty of her 22 Grand Slam titles in doubles came with Navratilova.

Earlier in the Hall of Fame Championships, James Blake moved closer to becoming the first top-seeded player to win the event in its 26-year history by defeating seventh-seeded Michael Llodra, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, to advance to the final.

Blake will face Taylor Dent in an all-American final. Dent rallied past Robby Ginepri, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Two-time champion Alex Corretja of Spain beat Czech qualifier Radek Stepanek, 7-5, 6-1, in a match delayed almost six hours by rain to reach the $600,000 Swiss Open final at Gstaad.

Corretja, in his first tournament since losing in the French Open semifinals last month, next faces Gaston Gaudio. Down a set and a break, the seventh-seeded Gaudio came back to beat Ivan Ljubicic, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2).

Carlos Moya and Younes El Aynaoui won in straight sets to reach the final of the $381,000 Swedish Open clay-court tournament at Bastad.

Moya, the 1998 French Open champion, beat Agustin Calleri, 6-4, 6-2, and El Aynaoui breezed past Tommy Robredo, 6-2, 6-2.

Four-time major champion Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario will play 17-year-old wild-card entry Myriam Casanova in the final of the $140,000 French Community Championship at Brussels.

Casanova, ranked 119th, upset No. 6-seeded Virginia Ruano Pascual, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. The top-seeded Sanchez-Vicario advanced when her semifinal opponent, Emilie Loit, quit because of a shoulder injury after losing the first set, 6-4.

Patricia Wartusch of Austria and Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic each rallied from a set down to win semifinals at the $110,000 Casablanca Open in Morocco. Wartusch defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1, and the unseeded Koukalova defeated Gisela Dulko of Argentina, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.... Vera Zvonareva reached her first WTA Tour final when top-seeded Paola Suarez quit after losing the first set of their semifinal at the Palermo International in Sicily. Suarez cited fatigue after losing the first set, 7-5. Zvonareva, 17, will face Argentina’s Mariana Diaz Oliva, who beat second-seeded Henrieta Nagyova, 6-2, 6-3.

Three-time Wimbledon champion Boris Becker had been charged with tax evasion, according to a published report in Germany. Munich prosecutor Manfred Wick told the newsweekly Focus of the charges but did not elaborate. Prosecutors could not be reached for comment.

Miscellany

Miami Dolphin quarterback Jay Fiedler will miss the start of training camp after undergoing hip surgery. Fiedler had surgery to repair a tear in his left hip joint, the opposite hip he injured during the 2000 exhibition season.

The Dolphins expect Fiedler to make a full recovery. He will be re-evaluated when training camp begins July 26 and a more definitive date for his return will then be set.

Police found broken glass and smeared blood inside a vehicle frequently driven by Allen Iverson’s wife, but an extensive search of the Philadelphia 76er star’s home and cars failed to turn up any guns, a police official said.

Francisco Javier Castillejo of Spain won a unanimous decision against Roman Karmazin of Russia at Madrid to become the World Boxing Council’s “interim” super-welterweight champion.

Castillejo is expected to fight the winner of Oscar De La Hoya’s planned September fight against Fernando Vargas. De La Hoya won a unanimous decision over Castillejo last year.
