Monty Berman, 90; British Costumer for Stage and Screen
Monty Berman, 90, whose British costume company clothed the casts of such films as “The African Queen,” “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Dr. Zhivago” and the James Bond movies, died Monday in Monte Carlo after a short illness.
He was the head of Berman’s, which was founded in 1900 by his father, Max, who made costumes for London musicals. In 1972, Monty Berman merged the company with Nathan’s, which had been making costumes for the London stage for 200 years.
Among the London stage productions his firm costumed were the original “My Fair Lady,” “The King and I” and “Les Miserables.”
