Cabrera Acquired in Trade With Indians

The Dodgers completed a minor trade with Cleveland Monday, acquiring utility player Jolbert Cabrera for triple-A left-hander Lance Caraccioli.

Cabrera, who hit .111 in 38 games for the Indians, will likely be assigned to triple-A Las Vegas, where he will add versatility--he can play second base, shortstop, third base and all three outfield positions--and depth.

Cabrera, 29, was a super-sub for Cleveland last season, hitting .261 with 38 runs batted in and a .312 on-base percentage in 141 games, but he hasn’t been the same since being shot in the right buttock during an attempted carjacking in his native Colombia last December.

Cabrera, whose brother, Orlando, plays shortstop for Montreal, lost some of his speed since the shooting and has been up and down between Cleveland and triple-A Buffalo twice this season. He has a .177 on-base percentage and is hitting .024 (one for 41) against right-handers.

“I know him well from the American League, and I’ve been trying to get him for six or seven months,” Dodger General Manager Dan Evans said. “He can play a lot of positions, and that can help with double switches. Our scouts believe he can be a valuable addition.”

Caraccioli, 24, went 4-3 with a 4.14 earned-run average in 10 starts for Las Vegas, but he was not considered one of the Dodgers’ better prospects.

Dave Hansen broke Manny Mota’s franchise record with his 107th pinch hit as a Dodger Sunday night against San Francisco, but he still wouldn’t put himself in the same class as Mota, who played for the Dodgers from 1969-80 and 1982 and currently serves as a Dodger coach.

“He was the best pinch-hitter in baseball,” Hansen said. “He didn’t have the facilities we had, the statistics ... he was self-taught. I’m lucky to be around him and to be learning from him for all these years.

“Pinch-hitting is not a popular role, but he made it recognized.”

First baseman Eric Karros, who hasn’t knocked in a run in the last 12 games, did not start Monday night, but it had nothing to do with the Felix Rodriguez fastball that hit him on the chin Saturday. Manager Jim Tracy said he wanted to give Karros, who started the previous 11 games, a day off.... Kevin Brown took another significant step in his recovery from June 11 surgery for a herniated disk in his lower back, throwing 60 pitches off a Dodger Stadium bullpen mound Monday. Tracy said Brown threw all of his pitches and he was “very encouraged” by Brown’s first mound appearance since surgery.
