Remembering the Man Who Touched Many Lives

I wept as I read about Jerry Melton. What a role model! (“For Best Teacher in a Supporting Role,” July 19).

Melton influenced hundreds of adolescents--as a surrogate parent, a mentor and a teacher. His actions spoke as loud as his words. He drove students home, to venues where they could get valuable experience, took them to dinner, created successful participatory experiences for generations.

He demonstrated clearly that the kind of attention we get in our formative years lives with us forever. His students came to remember him, to share stories about him, to name the school auditorium for him.
