Solis, Redattore Aren’t Together

Share

There is a possibility late this afternoon that the same horse or jockey will have won the $400,000 Eddie Read Handicap for a second year in a row.

What is certain is that the two won’t be winning the Grade I together.

Redattore, the defending champion, will try to take the Read, which is run at 1 1/8 miles on the turf, from the rail as the 5-1 third choice in the field. The Read will be the eighth race on a card that will feature a pick-six carryover of $211,777.

Meanwhile, Alex Solis, who was Redattore’s rider when he won the race at 5-2 in 2001, will be aboard 3-5 favorite Beat Hollow.

The reigning turf king in the United States, Beat Hollow, who is owned by Juddmonte Farms and trained by Bobby Frankel, has won two Grade I’s in a row in different states.

Not long before War Emblem’s shocker in the Kentucky Derby, the 5-year-old Sadler’s Wells horse won the Woodford Reserve at Churchill Downs on May 4, then, on the day War Emblem’s Triple Crown dreams were shattered, he went wire-to-wire in the Manhattan Handicap at Belmont Park.

A winner of six of eight, Beat Hollow will get most of the attention in the Read, but lurking among his opponents is the only horse to have beaten him in this country.

Sarafan, who defeated Beat Hollow by a neck in the Explosive Bid Handicap at the Fair Grounds in Louisiana on March 24, will try to remain unbeaten on the Del Mar turf. He won the restricted Harry F. Brubaker at 1 1/16 miles last Aug. 17.

Race of the day: Atelier will try to give trainer Shug McGaughey his seventh win in the last 15 years in the $250,000 Go For Wand Stakes at Saratoga. Her opponents in the Grade I include Miss Linda, Forest Secrets, Dancethrudawn, Too Scarlet, With Ability and Transcendental.

Who’s hot: A certain pick six player or players. There was one correct ticket Friday worth $380,775. Whoever had it, deserved it, as the winners included Humorous Lady ($82.20).

Who’s not: The field in today’s eighth at Santa Rosa. The 13 original entrants in the $8,000 maiden claimer are a combined 0 for 104.

Exotically speaking: A trifecta in the fourth keying Magnificent Max on top with Grand Visions, Burning Bay and Pikester in the two hole and all in the third spot.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 0/5. Money: Previous day/meet total: $0/$37.40. Total money bet: $70.
