NORTHERN IRELAND

Two men were shot and wounded in the fourth consecutive night of violence on the east side of Belfast, the capital, police said.

As many as 1,000 people at one point fought near the Roman Catholic Short Strand enclave in a mostly Protestant area, police said.

Extra soldiers were brought into the area, which since Friday had been the scene of bitter street violence between loyalists, who want Northern Ireland to remain part of Britain, and nationalists, who want the province reunited with the Republic of Ireland. Typically, the former are Protestants and the latter Catholics.
